Keep Your Israeli Number When You Switch Operators

Changing mobile operator in Israel does not mean losing your number. How portability works, what you need before you start, how long it takes, and what keeps working during the switch.

Your Israeli number is rarely just a number. It is the one your bank sends verification codes to, the one attached to your WhatsApp account, the one your health fund and your landlord have on file. That is exactly why changing operator feels risky — and exactly why portability exists.

What portability actually means

Portability lets you move an existing Israeli mobile number from one operator to another and keep it. The number stays yours; only the operator behind it changes. Your contacts have nothing to update, and you do not re-register your WhatsApp account.

Who starts the process

You start it with the NEW operator, not the old one. Going to your current operator first is the most common mistake: the request has to come from the receiving side anyway, and the outgoing operator has no reason to hurry.

What you need before you start

  • The number you want to keep, written in full.
  • The name of your current operator — Cellcom, Partner, Pelephone, Hot Mobile, Golan Telecom, 019 Mobile and others are all portable.
  • The account holder details exactly as the current operator has them. A mismatch here is the single most frequent cause of rejection.
  • A settled account. An unpaid balance or an unfinished device instalment can block the transfer.

How long it takes

The transfer itself is quick — usually within one business day once the request passes validation. What takes time is the check: if the holder name or ID does not match the current operator records, the request bounces and you start again. Getting those details right the first time is most of the battle.

Never cancel the old line first

Cancelling before the port completes is what actually loses a number. Once a line is closed the number returns to the pool and cannot be recovered. Keep the old line running until the new one answers.

What keeps working

  • WhatsApp: same number, same account, same history — no re-registration.
  • Bank and government one-time codes: they arrive on the new line as soon as it is live.
  • Your contacts: nobody needs to be told anything.

Porting onto a monthly eSIM plan

  1. 1Choose a monthly plan and select the option to bring an existing Israeli number.
  2. 2Enter the number and name your current operator.
  3. 3Install the eSIM QR code that arrives by email — but leave your current line active.
  4. 4When the transfer completes, the number goes live on the eSIM and the old line closes on its own.

Because the new line is an eSIM, there is nothing to collect and nothing to post. The switch happens between the two operators while your phone stays in your pocket.

Preguntas frecuentes

Does porting a number cost anything?
The transfer itself is free in Israel. What you pay is your new plan — and, if you leave early, whatever your previous contract still owes.
Will I lose service during the switch?
No. The old line stays active until the new one takes over, and the handover is a matter of minutes rather than days.
Can I port a number that is not in my name?
No. The holder details must match the current operator records. If the line is registered to a relative, it has to be transferred to you before it can be ported.
